Unfortunately, there is no known way to prevent bulimia, but early treatment. To erase any sign of such psychiatric disorder, one must know the signs of bulimia and seek for a doctor immediately. The subject must focus on keeping it from getting more severe. According to ERIC there three types of bulimia prevention: primary, secondary an tertiary.
Primary bulimia prevention deals with potential abnormal behaviors as in the reduction of eating disorder incidents all over the world. There are a few steps to be followed in such treatments:
The first step is the selection of a target group, most likely made up of females between 12 and 18 years old from middle and upper class and with a family background familiarized with eating disorders.
The next step is to divide them into experimental groups and control groups.  The experimental group will receive interventions, while the other not. All subjects will follow a reduction diet and are thought alternative ways of maintaining normal weights and realistic normal weight ranges according to their age and height.
All the persons will follow relaxation stress management trainings and a behavioral approach in order to change irrational beliefs.
The term should be followed up as long as feasible.
Some of the possible benefits from this type of prevention program may include a reduced incidence rate for eating disorders among the intervention group, a more exact identification of the persons who might suffer from this disease.
Of course, family and friends support is very important. Therefore, they must induce to the subjects some suggestions like: encouraging healthy eating, not dieting, not forbidding certain foods, making mealtime pleasant, promote physical activity, modeling healthy thoughts and behaviors, prohibiting teasing about body shape and size, emphasizing fitness.
Studies have found that 75% of the people diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, after appropriate treatment, symptoms eventually subside along with the eating disorder itself.
